EXCURSION «HOUSE ON TVERSKAYA, 14»
The excursion includes a tour of all the expositions of the museum and introduces the history of the house built by architect Matvey Fedorovich Kazakov at the end of the XVIII century.
The noble mansion has changed its appearance and owners over the centuries, there have been many wonderful, famous personalities in it. From 1898 to 1917, the house on Tverskaya Street belonged to merchant Grigory Eliseev. He devoted a significant part of the building to a store, which functioned for more than 100 years under the name of its first owner — «Eliseevsky».
The greatest trace in the history of the house was left by Princess Zinaida Alexandrovna Volkonskaya and writer Nikolai Alekseevich Ostrovsky. In 1824−1829, Princess Volkonskaya became the hostess of a literary and musical salon, which was visited by outstanding writers and poets. Alexander Pushkin himself was her frequent guest and in a poem called the lovely hostess «the queen of muses and beauty».
In 1935−1936, the legendary proletarian writer Nikolai Ostrovsky, the author of the cult Soviet novel «How Steel was Tempered», lived and worked here. His personal belongings, documents, photographs introduce the stages of life and creativity, and the memorial apartment effectively conveys the atmosphere of the Soviet era.
